Big thunder storm coming!

From the mountains to the coast, North Carolina is bracing for a powerful line of storms expected to sweep across our state beginning this afternoon.

This system is developing quickly to our west and is forecast to push into western North Carolina by early afternoon, reaching the Piedmont by late afternoon, and potentially impacting eastern counties through the evening hours. We’re looking at a serious threat for damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph, very heavy rainfall that could lead to localized flash flooding, and frequent lightning. Don’t be surprised if you see some hail, especially with the stronger cells.

The primary concerns with this storm include widespread power outages due to high winds and downed trees, as well as reduced visibility on roads from torrential downpours. There’s also a low but not insignificant risk of isolated tornadoes, particularly in the central and eastern parts of the state. Now is the time to secure any loose outdoor items, charge your phones, and make sure your emergency kit is ready. Stay off the roads if conditions become severe, and remember to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts.

Stay safe out there, North Carolina! We’ll keep you updated throughout the day. Tell us in the comments below how you’re preparing for this severe weather!
