While we love our beautiful North Carolina beaches, my own close call off Key West serves as a powerful reminder that even paradise can hold unexpected dangers.

It was July 2011, a beautiful summer day off the coast of Key West, Florida. I was out with a few friends, enjoying what we thought would be a relaxing afternoon of snorkeling and exploring the vibrant coral reefs. The water was crystal clear, the sun was warm, and everything felt perfect – until it wasn’t. We were about four miles offshore when a dark shadow, far too large to be another diver, quickly made its presence known.

Suddenly, the shadow transformed into a very real and very imposing shark, making an unmistakable bee-line right for our group. There was no mistaking its intent; in that heart-stopping moment, the thrill of the ocean quickly turned into a primal fight-or-flight instinct. We scrambled back towards our boat, adrenaline coursing through our veins, fortunate enough to make it aboard safely, but with a vivid, unforgettable memory of just how close we came to becoming something’s dinner that day.
