I thought I knew them

I first met Tyler Rullman in 2004 when he hired my firm to help with a strategic review.

I got to know Sean Murphy in 2007 when he brought my team in to support one of his companies.

I met Tim McLoughlin a decade ago after he joined Cofounders Capital.

Collectively, that’s more than 50 years of knowing these three men.

Or so I thought.

While preparing for a recent Harvard Club of the Research Triangle and GrepBeat conversation on the journey from elite athlete to entrepreneur, I started doing what I always do before moderating a panel: digging deeper.

I revisited old articles.

I reread biographies.

I looked up statistics, records and interviews.

And I kept having the same reaction:

Not because these men were hiding anything.

Quite the opposite.

Their accomplishments simply weren’t the things they led with.

In a culture that often rewards self-promotion, I found myself fascinated by three people who revealed their greatness slowly.

One was an Olympian and world-record holder.

One was one of the greatest basketball players in Harvard history.

One built a youth hockey program that continues impacting young athletes years later.

Yet what impressed me most wasn’t what they had accomplished.

It was what they valued.
