Greensboro’s Moravian Cookie: Now Our Official State Cookie!

Greensboro’s very own Moravian cookie is officially our state cookie, a testament to a grassroots effort and a beloved tradition!

The push started in 2018, when students at Brooks Global Studies in Greensboro wrote letters to lawmakers asking them to honor the Moravian cookie. These young advocates championed the thin, crisp, and richly spiced cookie, highlighting its deep historical roots and cultural significance within the Old North State, particularly its connection to Winston-Salem and other Moravian communities across the state.

After years of dedicated advocacy and legislative efforts, their work culminated recently as Governor Roy Cooper signed Senate Bill 208 into law, officially designating the Moravian cookie as North Carolina’s state cookie. This delicious honor celebrates a treat brought to the state by Moravian settlers in the 1700s, solidifying its place as a cherished symbol of North Carolina’s heritage and culinary pride for generations to come.
