Winter Storm Lasting Impacts in North Carolina

Even as the sun peeks out across our Tar Heel State, communities from the mountains to the coast are still grappling with the treacherous aftermath of the recent winter storm.

While the heavy snow and sleet have moved out of the region, the remnants of the storm continue to pose significant challenges. Many roads, especially secondary routes and shaded areas, remain coated with dangerous black ice, making travel hazardous. Power crews are working tirelessly to restore electricity to thousands still in the dark, and weakened tree limbs, heavy with ice, still present a threat to property and safety.

And the cold is far from over. North Carolina is bracing for a brutally frigid week, with overnight temperatures expected to plunge well into the teens, and daytime highs struggling to get above freezing. These dangerously low temperatures significantly increase the risk of frozen and bursting pipes, hypothermia, and frostbite. We urge Y’all to take extreme precautions to stay warm, protect their homes and pets, and check on elderly neighbors or those who may be vulnerable.
