Right here in North Carolina, health officials are sounding the alarm after more than 60 cases have been tied to a nasty parasite, known for causing what’s been dubbed ‘explosive diarrhea’.

North Carolina is currently grappling with a significant uptick in cases of Cyclospora, a tiny, single-celled parasite that, while microscopic, delivers a powerful punch. Those infected often experience severe, watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, and fatigue – symptoms that can persist for weeks if untreated. This unwelcome visitor typically spreads through contaminated food or water, frequently associated with fresh produce.

While not usually life-threatening for healthy individuals, Cyclosporiasis can lead to significant dehydration and nutrient loss, which is particularly concerning for the very young, the elderly, or those with weakened immune systems. Health officials are urging residents to practice diligent food safety, including thoroughly washing fruits and vegetables, and to seek medical attention if they experience prolonged gastrointestinal distress, especially after consuming produce that might have been exposed.
