North Carolina braces for winter storm (Evening update, Friday, Jan. 23)

Stock up on essentials and bundle up, Tar Heels, because a significant winter storm is now just hours away from impacting communities across North Carolina.

News 13 chief meteorologist Jason Boyer has just delivered the latest critical update on the forecast ahead of this week’s impending winter storm, which is now on an undeniable path towards North Carolina. His evening briefing confirms that residents across the state should prepare for a dangerous combination of snow, sleet, and freezing rain, beginning as early as late tonight for some western counties and spreading eastward through Saturday.

Boyer’s detailed analysis highlights the potential for significant travel disruptions and power outages across much of the state, urging residents to complete preparations now. The forecast indicates that impacts could range from several inches of snow in the western mountains to treacherous ice accumulations in the central Piedmont, with even parts of the eastern plains bracing for a wintry mix. This system is expected to linger through much of Saturday, making for a prolonged period of hazardous conditions.
