Good evening, North Carolina! After a milder stretch, it looks like winter is set to make a frosty return to eastern parts of our state this weekend.
Starting Saturday, a significant plunge in temperatures is expected across eastern North Carolina, ushering in much colder air from the north. This chill will pave the way for a developing coastal low-pressure system, which is forecast to track just offshore. Initially, this system will bring widespread rain to many eastern counties through Saturday night and into Sunday morning, impacting plans for anyone heading out.
However, as that cold air really locks in and the coastal system continues its slow trek, there’s a growing possibility that some of that rain could transition to a wintry mix, and even light snow, particularly for areas closest to the coast on Sunday. While significant accumulation isn’t a certainty at this stage, residents from the Inner Banks to the Outer Banks should be prepared for changing conditions, and potentially some slippery spots on roadways as temperatures drop to near or below freezing.
